Public-Vote Contests in Hawaii: Original Data and How to Win Locally
In our tracking, 25 distinct recurring public-vote programs run in Hawaii, and 49 of their 53 listings are best of Hawaii business polls. The count comes from an October 2, 2026 snapshot of programs seen between 2018 and 2026. June and August tie as the usual opening month, 6 of 32 programs each, and August is the usual close. Organizers' own websites host 42 listings, and Best of HONOLULU 2026 alone named 298 winners and finalists.

How many recurring public-vote contests does Hawaii actually have?
Hawaii has 25 distinct recurring public-vote programs in our tracking, counted by organizer from 53 curated listings in the October 2, 2026 snapshot of programs seen 2018-2026. Business polls fill 49 of those 53 listings, pageants account for 2, and a single pet listing and a single sport listing complete the count.
Twenty-five is a modest number for a state, and the shape of it matters more than the size. Most organizers come back edition after edition under the same masthead and on roughly the same calendar. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald closed Best of East Hawaii in mid-June in both 2023 and 2024 and printed the winners in late August both times. When a program repeats that faithfully, the last edition's rules page is the closest thing you will get to a preview of the next one.
Short version: public picks on the islands are mostly about businesses. Plate lunches, resorts, bagels and aloha attire, chosen by readers who fill in a newspaper or magazine form. Pageants, pets and sport barely register, which is worth knowing before anyone plans promotion around a format the state rarely runs.
Which Hawaii programs carry the most categories and history?
Best of HONOLULU, run by Honolulu Magazine, spans 161 categories. Readers made their picks in February 2026 across more than 90 general categories plus 43 family ones, and the editorial team then added picks of its own, for a final list of 298 winners and finalists in the 2026 edition.
That last step is the one to underline. Honolulu Magazine says its winners were selected by readers and its editorial team together, so a strong reader count is an input, not the verdict. The other long-running names are newspapers. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald runs Best of East Hawaii under rules that keep employees of Oahu Publications, Inc. and of participating sponsors, along with their immediate families, out of its prize drawing. The Maui News ran Best of Maui in 2015 and printed its forms in the daily paper and in its Maui Wrap and Maui Scene sections.
Two more magazine programs complete the named list. Honolulu Magazine also runs the HONOLULU Home Readers' Choice Awards. HAWAII Magazine runs a Readers' Choice Awards that covers everything from luxury resorts and family-friendly activities to shave ice and plate lunches, and it enters participants in a drawing for a free trip to the islands.
When do Hawaii reader polls open, and when do they close?
June and August tie as the usual opening month for recurring Hawaii programs in our tracking, at 6 of 32 programs each, with September next at 5. August is the usual closing month at 7 of 32, followed by June at 5 and January at 4, in the October 2, 2026 snapshot.
The named newspaper polls explain the June-and-August pattern. Best of East Hawaii stopped taking forms at midnight HST on Friday, June 16, 2023, and at 11:59 p.m. HST on Friday, June 14, 2024, and the winners ran in a special section on August 27 and August 25. The Maui News set June 30 as its 2015 Best of Maui deadline and printed the winners in a tabloid on September 6. Close in June, print in late summer.
Honolulu runs on a different clock, and the edition year will trip you up if you are not careful. The 2026 HONOLULU Home awards took picks from October 13 to November 24, 2025. HAWAII Magazine's 2025 Readers' Choice Awards closed on December 15, 2024. Best of HONOLULU 2026 collected its reader picks in February 2026. The year printed on a title is the year of the issue, and it is not always the year you fill in the form.
How many days does a Hawaii promotion window last?
Hawaii voting and nomination promotions ran a median of 23 days in our tracking, measured on 17 promotions, recurring or not, whose platform record carries both a start and an end date and that began between 2016 and 2026. Twenty-three days is a little over three weeks.
Three weeks goes fast. A supporter who means to fill in the form later has room for a handful of reminders before the window shuts, and a reminder sent after the close is just noise. The HONOLULU Home awards were the roomy exception on record: October 13 to November 24, 2025 is 42 days, close to twice the median.
I'd plan every Hawaii poll as if it were a three-week window and treat any extra time as a gift. Printed forms add one wrinkle. The Maui News said in 2015 that its forms would appear intermittently over the following weeks, so a reader who missed one issue had to wait for the next printing, and a business that counted on a single printed day lost the people who skipped it.
Which platforms host Hawaii contests, and where do their rules live?
Organizers' own websites host 42 of the 53 recurring Hawaii listings in our tracking. GoGo Photo Contest hosts 6, Second Street and Contest.vote host 2 each, and one listing sits on a fifth hosted tool. Most Hawaii counts follow a newspaper's or magazine's own form, under rules printed on the publisher's pages.
An own-site form means the publisher writes every limit itself, and the limits differ from one masthead to the next. Honolulu Magazine capped its Home awards at one submission per email address. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald asked for a valid name, address and contact details and turned away photocopies, which tells you its count still involved paper. Two programs, two different things that void a form.
For the hosted listings, the platform supplies the software and the organizer sets the rules, so nothing about a platform's defaults matters until the contest page says so. If an entry sits on GoGo Photo Contest or Second Street, the contest's own page is where the limit on picks and the closing time are written, and that page is the one to save.
How do you win a local reader poll in Hawaii?
Winning a Hawaii reader poll starts with forms that count. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald accepted a Best of East Hawaii form only with at least 10 categories completed, and Honolulu Magazine's Home awards set the same 10-category floor with one submission per email. A supporter who picks only your category has handed in nothing.
So tell people up front that the form takes ten picks, and let them choose the other nine themselves; regulars have opinions about shave ice anyway. If your entry is a person, say a stylist or a chef, the Tribune-Herald wanted a company or place of business named alongside the person, so give supporters both names exactly as you want them printed.
Then remember who decides. At Best of HONOLULU the editors sit next to the readers, so the business behind the entry has to hold up when a magazine looks at it closely. No reader count fixes a bad plate lunch.
Example scenario (illustrative - not a client result): say a family bakery in East Hawaii hears about the poll with a few weeks left before a June close. The useful work is a sign at the register, a short note to regulars with the deadline in Hawaii time, and the ten-category reminder in every message. Nothing clever. Mostly arithmetic and timing.
Where Voting Now fits: we run advertising for a contest entry through our own social channels, partner groups, bloggers and ads, aimed at real people on the islands who already know the business. That brings people to the organizer's form. We do not fill in forms, we never use bots or fake accounts, and nobody can promise a title in a poll where editors add picks of their own. The quote is agreed before anything runs, priced the way advertisers price leads.
What do Hawaii contest rules say about promotion and prizes?
The Best of East Hawaii rules from the Hawaii Tribune-Herald say nothing about advertising, social posts or paid promotion of a poll entry. They govern the form itself: voters 18 or older, a valid name, address and contact details, no photocopies, 10 categories minimum, and no prize for employees of Oahu Publications, sponsors or their families.
The photocopy clause is the one that touches promotion directly. A shop that copies the printed form and stacks the copies by the register has not helped anyone, because each copy gets turned away. Hand out the paper itself, or point people to wherever the organizer takes entries.
Prizes in Hawaii polls belong to the organizers. The Tribune-Herald drew one winner at random from all forms received for a cash prize, Honolulu Magazine entered its Home voters in a drawing for a restaurant gift card, and HAWAII Magazine offered a trip. None of those rules addresses a business adding a reward of its own for a pick. I wouldn't. The organizer already rewards people for taking part in the poll, and a second reward is the first thing an editor would question.
One state rule sits above all of this. Hawaii's Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs says a telemarketer who makes you hand over money or buy something before entering a sweepstakes or contest is breaking the law. That is the DCCA's statement about entering, and it says nothing about promoting an entry you have already made.
- Age: the Tribune-Herald required voters to be 18 or older.
- Identity: a valid name, address and contact information on every form.
- Paper: photocopied forms were not accepted.
- People: a pick for a person had to name a company or place of business too.
- Prize: one cash winner drawn at random, with publisher and sponsor staff excluded.

Step by step
-
Write down the HST deadline
Copy the closing time from the organizer's page in Hawaii time. Best of East Hawaii closed at 11:59 p.m. HST in 2024, which is already the next day on the mainland, so out-of-state family needs the local hour.
-
Count ten categories per form
Tell every supporter that Best of East Hawaii and the HONOLULU Home awards wanted at least 10 completed categories, and that the other picks are theirs to make. A form with one pick counts for nobody.
-
Keep each supporter on their own email
Honolulu Magazine counted one submission per email address for its Home awards. Ask each person to use their own inbox; a household that shares one address gets one form counted, whatever its size.
-
Hand out originals, not copies
The Tribune-Herald refused photocopied forms. If printed forms sit at your counter, keep them as originals from the paper, or send customers to the organizer's own entry page instead of a copier.
-
Share the edition's rules with us
Send Voting Now the rules page and the closing date of your Hawaii poll. We read the limits with you, say whether advertising fits that edition, and agree a quote before any promotion runs.
Questions and answers
Which habits win local business awards in East Hawaii or Honolulu?
Local business awards in East Hawaii and Honolulu go to businesses whose customers hand in valid forms, and both programs required at least 10 categories per form. Habit beats a last-minute push. Ask regulars in person while the window is open, remind them before the close, and give them your exact business name. At Best of HONOLULU the editorial team adds its own picks too, so the business itself has to deserve the title.
What carries over from Hawaii if you want to get best of Omaha?
The method carries over to best of Omaha, but the rules do not, because Omaha's organizer writes its own terms for each edition. Read that edition's rules for the minimum number of categories, the limit per person or per email and the closing time. Then ask real customers inside the window, as a Honolulu shop would. If the rules say nothing about promotion, ask the organizer in writing before spending on ads.
How would you win best of Boston with what Hawaii polls teach?
Winning best of Boston would start the way a Hawaii poll does: with that edition's rules, its closing time and its limit on picks per person. Boston's organizer sets its own terms, so the Hawaii specifics (ten categories, one submission per email, no photocopies) are examples of what to look for, not rules that travel. The Best of HONOLULU lesson does travel: where editors help choose, the business has to hold up.
How do you get nominated for best of Las Vegas versus a Honolulu poll?
Getting nominated for best of Las Vegas depends on that organizer's own nomination round, which its official rules for the edition describe. Honolulu works another way. At Best of HONOLULU the readers pick and the editorial team then adds picks of its own, which is a second route onto the final list. Find out which structure your poll uses before you ask anyone for anything.
How is a Hawaii photo contest counted next to a newspaper poll?
A Hawaii photo contest is counted under the rules on its own contest page, not under a newspaper's form rules. In our tracking, GoGo Photo Contest, a photo-contest platform, hosts 6 of the 53 recurring Hawaii listings. Outside business polls, the state's listings include 2 pageants, one pet listing and one sport listing. No baby contest in Hawaii appears by name among those programs, so read any such contest's own rules before promoting an entry.
When does best of Hawaii 2026 voting open?
Best of Hawaii 2026 voting has no single opening date, because each organizer runs its own edition on its own calendar. Some 2026 titles were settled early: the 2026 HONOLULU Home awards took picks from October 13 to November 24, 2025, and Best of HONOLULU 2026 collected reader picks in February 2026. Best of East Hawaii closed in mid-June in 2023 and 2024. Check each organizer's page for its dates.

Voting Now does not fill in Best of East Hawaii forms, Honolulu Magazine submissions or HAWAII Magazine entries for anyone, and never supplies email addresses, photocopied forms or accounts. We cannot change a result that Honolulu Magazine's editors help decide, and we will not promise a title in any Hawaii poll. Political or governmental votes are outside what we promote, and so is any Hawaii contest whose rules forbid paid promotion of a contest entry.
A contest vote sits under two rulebooks, the platform's and the organizer's. Meta's Spam standard lists offering anything of monetary value in exchange for engagement as a covered behavior, and the Santa Barbara Independent says it will disqualify a business that offers voters incentives of any kind. Voting Now reads both rulebooks before it plans anything, and a clause that forbids outside promotion ends the job.
Contest platforms check votes as routine. Easypromos runs each vote through 11 security controls and does not count one that fails any of them, and Woobox says voting fraud is becoming more common as contests grow popular. Voting Now promotes to real people who choose for themselves, at the contest's own pace, and none of this is a method for getting past a check.
Under 16 CFR 465.8, buying fake indicators of social media influence for a commercial purpose can violate the FTC's rule, which is one reason Voting Now promotes to real people and does not bring in bought counts. The FTC's Endorsement Guides also require a paid creator to disclose the connection clearly. Whether outside promotion is lawful for a given contest is a question for a lawyer, and Voting Now takes no political or governmental votes.
No quote promises a win, a ranking or a vote count, because the organizer counts the votes and applies its own rules. The Santa Barbara Independent, for one, says it will disqualify a business that offers voters incentives of any kind. Nothing runs before the client approves a written quote.
